AI FUNDING
Microsoft and OpenAI look to back Figure AI with $500 million, spurring humanoid robotics in BMW's automation drive

Figure AI, a California-based robotics innovator founded by Brett Adcock in 2022, is making significant waves in the realm of industrial robotics. The company is in talks to secure a substantial $500 million investment in funding by tech titans Microsoft and OpenAI. This financial backing is set to skyrocket Figure AI's valuation to an impressive $1.9 billion.

Specializing in the development of bipedal humanoid robots, Figure AI is poised to revolutionize the workplace. Their flagship creation, Figure 01, is an autonomous humanoid robot designed to seamlessly integrate into human-centric environments like warehouses and manufacturing floors. Its design focuses on performing repetitive and hazardous tasks, thereby enhancing workplace safety and efficiency.

Figure 01 combines the dexterity and mobility of the human form with advanced AI technology, enabling it to undertake complex actions such as navigating through spaces, climbing stairs, and handling tools. This integration propels Figure 01 beyond the capabilities of traditional robots, making it a versatile asset in manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, and retail sectors.

In a significant industry collaboration, Figure AI has partnered with BMW to deploy these humanoid robots in automotive manufacturing. The robots will be trialed in a BMW factory in South Carolina, where they are expected to automate challenging tasks, optimizing the manufacturing process and ensuring worker safety.

Through this groundbreaking initiative, Figure AI, backed by the support of Microsoft and OpenAI, is not just advancing the field of humanoid robotics but also reshaping how industries approach automation and workforce productivity.

APPLE
Apple set to unveil generative AI features in upcoming software updates

Created with Midjourney

During a recent quarterly earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the tech giant is developing generative AI features for its software platforms, slated for release later this year. This announcement signals a major update in the works, possibly making iOS 18 one of the most significant overhauls in the operating system's history.

Cook highlighted Apple's intensive efforts in AI, noting the company's tradition of working quietly before unveiling new advancements. "We continue to spend a tremendous amount of time and effort, and we’re excited to share the details of our ongoing work in that space later this year," Cook stated. Despite probing by analysts for more specifics, Cook remained tight-lipped, adhering to Apple's strategy of unveiling developments only after substantial progress.

This move into generative AI positions Apple in direct competition with rivals like Google and Samsung, who have already been integrating advanced AI features in their smartphones. Apple's rare forward-looking statement suggests ambitious plans to incorporate AI into its key software platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Cook concluded the call with an optimistic outlook on Apple's role in the generative AI space, indicating a significant shift in how AI might be integrated into Apple's software ecosystem in the coming months.
